How to do Succulents with Hygge Style
Succulents and hygge go hand-in-hand. They are simple, elegant pieces of nature that are easy to bring into your home.
These gorgeous plants are juicy, thick and often symmetrical, found in dry climates that store water in their leaves and roots. You will see these plants thriving in locations such as Spain or dry states such as Texas and Arizona. This makes them both stunning and low maintenance which is ideal for a simple, hygge lifestyle.
The most popular succulents include:
Aloe vera
Cacti
The painted lady (Echeveria derenbergii)
Jade plant
Mexican gem (Echeveria elegans)
Air plants
Often these plants are housed in glass terrariums which have seen a resurgence in the home furniture market in the past couple of years (tips for buying below). These glass homes for your plants create a beautiful aesthetic while providing the light and space for your plants to grow, even if you live in a darker cooler terrain.
Some benefits to housing plants in terrariums include:
Protecting plants from damage
Keeping plants away from kids or pets
The ability to hang plants above the ground/ table
When planting terrariums follow these basic steps:
Add chunky rocks to your base. This is where excess water will live if you happen to over water. It removes the water from the roots prevent rot from forming.
Next add cactus soil. This is usually a mix of potting soil and sand.
Place your succulents/ cacti. Try not to overcrowd the terrarium or have the plants touching the glass sides as these can get warm in the direct sunlight
Place the terrarium in an area that gets a lot of sunlight. I prefer kitchen or living room windows.
Some tips on creating beautiful terrariums for your home:
Don’t mix cacti with other succulents. Cacti need much less water than other succulents and too much water can introduce rot.
Add colorful rocks/ stones to the base. The best selection of such rocks (and for the best price) can actually be found at your nearest pet store with fish. These often have amazing rock selections sold by the pound.
Finally, my favorite part about having succulents is propagating Essentially, if leaves fall off of your succulent, simply place it on soil in a new pot or in the existing terrarium. Soon small pink roots will grow and a new beautiful plant will bud from the roots. By purchasing one or two plants you have the potential to slowly fill your home with succulents in every room through this system.
